Barcelona! A Picture Day

Since neither Mark nor I had been to Barcelona before, while we were so close, we decided to take a tour of some of the highlights of this remarkable city.

The construction of Barcelona's Cathedral, with its
combination of Romanesque, Gothic and Neo-Gothic styles,
began in 1298 and was completed around 1890,
following the original plans.

Keli, one of the gargoyles on the cathedral is a unicorn!

During the Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939, a bomb
detonated in the very small plaza adjacent to this church,
which was being used as a school at the time. The walls
have not been repaired as a reminder of those terrible times.

A view of the city from Montjuic, with its two famous historic
landmarks, La Sagrada Familia on the left, and the
Cathedral on the right.

It was hot and humid, an ideal day for a walk on the beach

The Basilica de la Sagrada Familia is the most famous
landmark in Barcelona, and a very unusual church building,
rather like a cathedral dressed like Elton John.

Mark took a video which gives a really
good view of the interior.

I always like looking at the ceilings

and my sweetheart!

Walking Las Ramblas

This is just a part of one of the cemeteries in the Barcelona
area. The whole cemetery stretched for nearly a mile.

Almost all signs in Barcelona are in Catalán, the historic
local language, and most, but not all are in Spanish as well.
You will hear Catalán spoken frequently on the streets.
